Il signor Lazarescu ha 63 anni e vive da solo in un piccolo appartamento. Con lui ci sono solo i suoi tre gatti. Un sabato sera Lazarescu ha un malessere e chiama l''ambulanza. Prima che arrivi il personale paramedico, cerca di alleviare i dolori con le medicine che ha in casa. Apre il suo armadietto e si accorge di averle finite. Chiede allora aiuto ai suoi vicini, che lo soccorrono ma si accorgono anche che ha bevuto. Finalmente arriva l''ambulanza, con a bordo Mioara, un’infermiera, che decide di trasportare Lazarescu all''ospedale. Lì, però, le cose si complicano, perché il pronto soccorso è pieno di feriti in seguito a un grosso incidente automobilistico. L''anziano viene perciò dirottato su un altro ospedale. Anche lì, quella che sembrava una semplice formalità, un ricovero in ospedale per ulteriori controlli, si trasforma in un incubo. La notte trascorre mentre Mioara guida attraverso tutta Bucarest, cercando di trovare un ospedale che accolga il paziente, le cui condizioni si aggravano sempre di più…
È il film vincitore della sezione “Un Certain Regard” dell’ultimo Festival di Cannes.
Mr. Lazarescu is 63 years old and lives in a block of flats, together with his three cats. It’s a Saturday evening, Mr. Lazarescu doesn''t fell too well, so he calls for the ambulance. Until the paramedics arrive, he tries to ease the pain with something from his own supply of medecins. Because he is short of the pills he needs, he asks for his neighbours''help. They give him the first aid, although they can smell he’s been drinking. Then the ambulance and Mrs. Mioara, the paramedic, arrive. She decides to take him to the hospital. But things get complicated at the hospital. A car crash with lots of casualties is the priority for the doctors in the ER. Mr. Lazarescu is send to another hospital. What looked initially like a simple formality, the admission to the hospital and the monitoring of an old man, turns into a nightmare. As the night develops, Mioara drives around Bucharest, trying to find a hospital that will accept the patient, whose health is deteriorating at an alarming rate.
The film won the “Un Certain Regard Award” at the latest Cannes Film Festival.
