La sedicenne Ryna è la figlia di un poveraccio che gestisce una stazione di servizio e un’officina in un piccolo paese della Romania. A Ryna piace lavorare come meccanico, ma il suo apparire come un ‘maschiaccio’ non è una scelta personale: è piuttosto un tentativo di compiacere il padre, che avrebbe preferito un figlio maschio. Il suo modesto e non convenzionale stile di vita sembra tuttavia idilliaco, considerato che il paesino in cui vive si trova sul romantico e selvaggio delta del Danubio. Invece ciò che diventa sempre più evidente è il fatto che il padre la considera una proprietà personale. E non è l’unico. Un amico, un amore d’infanzia, pretende che la loro amicizia diventi più “adulta”. Il sindaco del posto vorrebbe che lei fosse la garanzia per un affare che il padre non ha rispettato. Quando poi un giovane ricercatore francese, che vive nel paesino, inizia a incoraggiarla a diventare più femminile e indipendente, la situazione per Ryna si fa sempre più difficile e drammatica…
16-year-old Ryna is the daughter of a poor man who runs a gas station and repair workshop in a small community in Romania. She likes working as a mechanic, but her tomboy look is not of her own choosing – it smacks of the self-denying attempt to placate a father who wanted a son. Her modest and unconventional life initially seems idyllic, especially since she lives in the romantic wilderness of the Danube delta. However, it gradually becomes clear that her father sees Ryna as his personal property. And it’s not only her father who exercises proprietary claims. A childhood sweetheart is telling Ryna it’s time their innocent friendship became more “adult”. And the local provost would like to claim her as security for a deal he reckons her father has failed to honour. When a French researcher based in the small town nearby starts encouraging Ryna to be more feminine and independent, the situation escalates dramatically…
