THE SIREN MYTH BETWEEN IMAGERY AND VISUAL ARTS WITH SOME CINEMA CLASSICS

At 11:00 the meeting with the authors will be held at Caffè San Marco, with Tamara von Steiner (director Controindicazione), Aleksandar Mijailović (DoP Controindicazione), Zrinko Ogresta (director On the Other Side), Mina Mileva and Vesela Kazakova (directors The Beast Is Still Alive), Ivan Marinović (director The Black Pin), Audrius Stonys (director The Woman and the Glacier), Andrius Blaževičius (director The Saint).
The special event is at 14:00 at Sala Tripcovich, showing The Valley Of Peace (Dolina Miru) by France Štiglic, a classic of Slovenian postwar cinema, in a newly-restored version presented by the Slovenian Film Centre at the latest Cannes Film Festival.
At 16:00 the Documentary Competition presents We’ll Be Alright (Manuel de Libération) by Aleksandr Kuznetsov. The documentary follows Yulia & Katia, who went from an orphanage to a neuropsychiatric institution in Siberia. Deprived of freedom, work and family, they haven’t ever got the right of self-determination. The author will be present.
Another competing documentary will be shown at 18:00 – A German Life (Ein Deutsches Leben) by Christian Krönes, Olaf S. Müller, Roland Schrotthofer and Florian Weigensamer. Brunhilde Pomsel was the closest person to one of the worst criminals in world history than anyone else presently alive. She used to work as secretary and stenographer for the Nazi-Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels. Today the 105-year-old lady lives in Bavaria. This is the first time that she talks about her experiences. Christian Krönes will be present.
At 20:30 the Feature Film Competition presents Nightlife (Nočno Zivljenje) by Damjan Kozole, Best Director at the last Karlovy Vary FF. The film is a metaphorical exploration of a thriller on the dark side of Slovenia. The life of a wealthy married couple changes radically in an instant. While the husband is in critical condition after an accident that occurred under strange circumstances, the wife tries to understand the situation and to salvage what she can. The author will be present.
Last film of the day at Sala Tripcovich is Mother (Ema) by Kadri Kõusaar, from the Baltic Film Focus and Genre Surprises. This darkly comic crime mystery set in small-town Estonia centers on Elsa, her comatose son Lauri, and the locals, who are abuzz with rumors about who shot Lauri and why. The author will be present.
At Teatro Miela the projections will start at 14:00 with the Tribute to Vitalij Manskij, with a showing of Virginity (Devstvenost). Three girls leave their province to live in Moscow. They are ready to use their virginity to make career. Manskij himself will be in attendance.
At 16:00 the Baltic Focus presents My Father the Banker (Mans Tēvs Bankieris) by Ieva Ozolina, in which the director is looking for his father, who had disappeared after a huge bankruptcy in Latvia during the 90s. The film has a surprise ending. The author will be present.
At 18:00 Teatro Miela will host a book presentation of “Omero Antonutti” by Guido Botteri, edited by Comunicarte and Trieste Film Festival. Antonutti himself will be in attendance. Right after, there will be a showing of Father and Master (Padre Padrone) by Paolo & Vittorio Taviani. The true story of the life of Gavino Ledda, the son of a Sardinian shepherd, and how he managed to escape his harsh, almost barbaric existence by slowly educating himself, despite violent opposition from his brutal father. Based on Ledda’s autobiographical book, Padre Padrone received the Palme d’Or in Cannes. One of the most notable performances by Omero Antonutti, who will be present.
At 21:30 the Corso Salani Award presents Those I Met, May Not Have Seen Me (Chi Mi Ha Incontrato Non Mi Ha Visto) by Bruno Bigoni, An irresistible mockumentary about image and memory: love for research, poetry and a hint of intelligent irony against the institutions of knowledge. The author will be present.
We would also like to mention that at 16:00 the Magazzino delle Idee will host the Cine-Workshop With Immaginario Scientifico (Cinelab con Immaginario Scientifico @Magazzino delle Idee), in collaboration with Container_120. A creative construction workshop for children aged 8-11, in which participants will build a scientific prototype aimed at promoting manual dexterity, but also stimulating reflection on the scientific aspects of cinema. Later on, at 18:00, there will be a showing of the films on “The Myth of the Siren”, from imagination to visual arts. Participants will watch La Sirène by Georges Méliès, The Fairy of the Surf (La Fée des Grèves) by Louis Feuillade and O Pássaro Da Noite / L’Oiseau De La Nuit by Marie Losier. The TSFF Exhibitions at the Magazzino delle Idee are open every day from 10:00 to 20:00.
