Il racconto su tre fratelli del Prekmurje in Slovenia, i quali, ognuno a modo proprio, desiderano far fortuna nella vita. In questo modo, però, la tradizione familiare comincia lentamente a indebolirsi. Il figlio maggiore, sposatosi per la seconda volta, parte temporaneamente per lavoro, come d'altronde la maggior parte degli uomini in quel villaggio. Il fratello di mezzo, invece, al ritorno dal suo lavoro temporaneo, risistema il vecchio mulino facendone una locanda. Ritorna anche il fratello minore, che riesce ad impedire sì" un'epidemia del bestiame, ma non a stabilire dei contatti con gli uomini. Soltanto il padre è fortemente legato alla terra e alla tradizione, e prega suo nipote che alla fine del servizio militare ritorni da lui in paese.

The story of three brothers from Prekmurje in Slovenia, each of whom in his own way wants to make his fortune in life. But in this way the family tradition slowly begins to weaken. After his second marriage, the older brother leaves for a short time to look for work, as do most of the men from the village. The middle brother, instead, returns from his temporary job and does up the old mill as a tavern. The younger brother also returns and manages to prevent the spread of an epidemic among the cattle, but cannot establish any firm human relationships. Only the father feels the ties to the land and tradition and begs his grandson to return to him in the village after his military service.
