ITALIAN PREMIERE
A film about a generation of youth from the city of Mostar in Bosnia, who, on the brink of maturity, are shaken by the devastation of war and the tough decision to escape from it. Their exile stories from the 1990s, recounted in letters sent to the director of the film from refugee camps scattered across Europe, are confronted with present-day conditions of the city they were forced to leave. A film about a lost generation, exile, tough decisions, and the response to the most difficult question of any war: to stay or to run?
Deserters has won Best Central and East European Film Award and Best Sound Design Award at Jihlava IDFF 2022, where the film had its world premiere.
Damir Markovina
A film director, producer, actor and writer, Damir Markovina was born in 1973 in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. In 2000 he graduated in Acting and subsequently in Film and TV Directing (Documentary film) in 2022 from the Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb. He has performed as an actor in many Croatian films and television series. His stage play Mongrels won the Croatian national Marin Držić award for best new drama in 2016. His short documentary film The Shift was selected at Sarajevo FF 2019 and his mid-length documentary Wait for me received several awards. Deserters is his second mid-length documentary film.
