Young typists spend their time on reciprocal displays of their purchases rather than on their work. When they do not respond to their chief’s ringing, the elderly clerk comes to their office. The girls scatter to their typewriters. Only the most courageous of them explains to him that they are getting themselves ready for a ball and therefore they have bought new shoes. The clerk recalls how he used to dance as a young man and the girl invites him to dance. The man, however, soon loses his breath…

Elmar Klos
Award-winning director and screenwriter, Elmar Klos was born in 1910 in Brno, present-day Czech Republic. He collaborated extensively with Slovak director Ján Kadár, with whom he shared in 1965 the Oscar for Best Foreign Film for The Shop on Main Street. Their film Death Is Called Engelchen obtained the Golden Prize at the 1963 Moscow IFF. He died in Prague in 1993.
