In a godforsaken post-Soviet village, Larysa falls in love with “Scar”, an attractive young criminal. After he leaves for the city, she will be forced to follow the traditional life she has always refused. However, Vitka, her 5-year-old rebellious cousin, holds a secret that could change everyone’s destiny. When the Trees Fall premiered in 2018 at the Berlinale, in the Panorama section.

“This is my first full-length feature and, therefore, I focused on the themes that had the most impact on my life. Part of the story’s foundation has been gathered from my own childhood. The film is set in a child’s world, in a pastoral setting full of spirits, mystical creatures and ghosts – these are the memories I have of the place where I once lived. The story is an account of what is most important to me today – choosing one’s own path… We placed significant importance on the artistic components of the film’s mise en scène that hyperbolise nature and costumes. The film’s world is an exaggeration of reality. Its ugliness is still shown through the eyes of a child.” (M. Nikitiuk)
