“I graduated in 1954 with the film The Arrest, based on the first chapter of Franz Kafka’s The Trial. It was screened at the Venice Film Festival. Among the audience was Luchino Visconti, who, at the end of the film, was kind and said something very nice to me that I regarded as an encouragement: ‘Very difficult subject, but a happy hand’. Luigi Di Gianni
A director, documentary filmmaker, screenwriter and professor, Luigi Di Gianni was born in 1926 in Naples. After finishing his studies in philosophy at La Sapienza University, he enrolled at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, where he graduated in 1954 with the short film The Arrest. From his collaboration with anthropologist Ernesto de Martino came Magia lucana, awarded Best Documentary at the 1958 Venice Film Festival. La tana was presented at Cannes in 1968. He died in 2019 in Rome.
