The documentary diptych Non-Aligned & Ciné-Guerrillas: Scenes from the Labudović Reels is both an archive-driven film covering the landmark moments in the birth of a movement fighting for a more just and equitable world order, and the story “behind the images” narrated by the man who filmed them: Stevan Labudović. A cameraman for Yugoslav Newsreels, Labudović was assigned to follow President Tito for more than a quarter of the 20th century. Non-Aligned re-traces the birth of the Non-Aligned movement, examining how a global project of political emancipation was constituted by the cinematic image.
The film premiered at IDFA in Amsterdam.
“At a time when the world was divided into Cold War blocs, Yugoslav filmmakers and reporters enjoyed a unique position in-between. Their solidarity with anti-imperial and socialist struggles won them insider access to countries closed off to the foreign press. As a result, the archive of the Yugoslav Newsreels in Belgrade today houses a unique and largely unexplored trove of material from which we lay the cornerstone of this film.” (M.Turajlić)
Mila Turajlić is an award-winning director and producer born in 1979 in Belgrade. In 2011, the Trieste FF presented her Cinema Komunisto, which was awarded Best Documentary. Her film The Other Side of Everything (also presented in Trieste in 2018) was HBO Europe’s first co-production with Serbia, and won more than 30 awards including the IDFA Award for Best Documentary Film. Non-Aligned and Ciné-Guerrillas: Scenes from the Labudović Reels premiered at DOK Leipzig.
