Vivid portraits of old people from the Slovak regions of Liptov and Orava, who live in inner freedom despite the surrounding civilizational chaos. Inspired by the photographs by Martin Martinček, Dušan Hanák used his genuine sensitivity in his portrayal of his truly unique characters, their original attitudes towards life, and their admirable innocence.
Celebrated director and screenwriter, Dušan Hanák was born in Bratislava in 1938 and studied at FAMU in Prague. He started making feature-length films after the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1968, and several were soon banned. Among them, Ja milujem, ty miluješ (I Love, You Love), screened eight years after its making at the 1989 Berlinale, winning the Silver Bear for Best Direction. Retrospectives of his films were held worldwide, and he was the recepient of prestigious official recognitions for his lifetime achievements in cinema.
