From the A of Avala, a jewellery shop on Via Roma, to the Z of Zastava, the Yugoslavian cars that once filled the streets of Trieste. A small ‘dictionary of memories’ that recounts a period in the history of the border city between the 1960s and 1990s, a ‘treasure island’ city for thousands of Yugoslavian citizens. A collection of memoirs made up of public and private memories, images and numbers of trade and commerce, scandalous reports on sudden fortunes, major international events and daily life on either side of the border, as well as tales of disingenuity, freedom and exchange, fantasy and creativity.
