A sarcastic report on living in an enclosed reservation behind the iron curtain. Against the backdrop of a first-plan confrontation between its natives and inquisitive strangers, Hanák in a sequence of amusing visual and aural situations, uncovers weariness of a socialist society tired of building “brighter tomorrows“ and points out the extent of backwardness or indifference of its inhabitants.

Dušan Hanák
Celebrated director and screenwriter, Dušan Hanák was born in Bratislava in 1938 and studied at FAMU in Prague. He started making feature-length films after the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1968, and several were soon banned. Among them, I Love, You Love, screened eight years after its making at the 1989 Berlinale, winning the Silver Bear for Best Direction. Retrospectives of his films were held worldwide, and he was the recepient of prestigious official recognitions for his lifetime achievements in cinema.
