ITALIAN PREMIERE
Seven hypnotic and unpredictable short stories culminate in a psychological kaleidoscope of couples, families and friends, all connected by their common fate. Bence Fliegauf continues his anthropological exploration of his 2003 feature debut, Forest. Employing the same circular storytelling structure, Fliegauf frames these seven tales -almost completely set in interiors- in tightly composed, claustrophobic shots, emphasising external forces that hover over his protagonists’ lives, including religion, death and grief. Set over one night, the film begins with a teenage girl blaming her father for her mother’s death; a young woman works herself into a fit of jealousy over her boyfriend lending his camera to another girl; a couple is struggling to conceive a child; an old man, a former heroin addict, is wallowing in despair about his surgery the next day; a religious mother wants to stop her young son from fantasy role-playing as she believes it is a gateway to Satan; a pair of friends try to convince a former hitman to kill a quack healer whom the man considers responsible for the death of his ex-girlfriend. Bookending the film is a short segment with a young girl and her dying grandfather. Amateurs worked with professionals on this next-to-no-budget film, that won the Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance (Lilla Kizlinger) at the 2021 Berlinale, where the film had its premiere.
