The old city of Tblisi is the place where you fall madly in love for the Caucasus. Crooked lanes with buildings to which vines cling, once-gleaming facades now shattered by earthquakes and all those finely carved wooden balconies, now the pride and symbol of the city. Tblisi slips through your fingers. It only reveals itself in moments of distraction, amidst the incense of the Orthodox churches, in the silence of the mosques, behind the stained-glass windows of the synagogue. Or in its hidden furnaces, in the colourful hallways, in the alleys where you can breathe in the Middle East and in the tree-lined avenues, a parade of theatres and museums, where, there is no doubt, this is Europe. The question will torment you. “Are we in Europe or Asia?” “Who cares?” whispers Tblisi.
