Russia, fine del Cinquecento. Il boiardo Boris Godunov, dopo aver fatto assassinare l’erede al trono, lo zareviã Dimitrij, si ritira in convento. Ma alla morte del vecchio zar la folla chiede che sia proprio Boris Godunov a essere incoronato. Boris dopo un rifiuto iniziale, accetta. Al Cremlino però non è felice. Tutti lo odiano e il fantasma dello zareviã lo perseguita. Alla periferia dell’Impero intanto serpeggia una rivolta capeggiata da qualcuno che si fa passare per Dimitri. È Grigorij Otrepiev, falso zareviã, un novizio fuggito dal convento, spinto dall’ambizione. Boris sempre più tormentato dai rimorsi ha le allucinazioni e quando sente di un miracolo avvenuto alla tomba dello zareviã vorrebbe nuovamente ritirarsi in convento ma, dopo aver designato suo figlio come successore, muore. Frattanto la rivolta di popolo guidata da Grigorij infuria: agli innocenti non resta che piangere sul destino della madre Russia.
Russia, late 16th century. The boyar, Boris Godunov, after having the heir to the throne, tsarevich Dmitri, assassinated, retires to a monastery. But upon the death of the old tsar, the crowds demand that Boris Godunov be enthroned. At first Boris refuses, but then accepts. He is unhappy at the Kremlin, however. He is hated by all and the ghost of the tsarevich pursues him. Meanwhile, on the edges of the empire, a revolt gains momentum, headed by a man passing himself off to be tsarevich Dmitri. He is Grigorij Otrepiev, a false tsarevich, a novice who has fled his monastery on the spurs of ambition. Ever more tormented by remorse, Boris has hallucinations, and when he hears of a miracle that has taken place at the tomb of the tsarevich, he seeks once more to retreat to his monastery. However, after designating his son as successor, he falls, dead. Meanwhile, the revolt of the people led by Grigorij destroys all; the innocent can do nothing but bewail the destiny of mother Russia. |
