Per qualcuno è la fine del mondo. Per altri è l'inizio di una nuova vita. Il fiume Oder che separa Francoforte da Subice, la Germania dalla Polonia, è un polo d'attrazione per migliaia di persone che sognano una vita migliore. È lì che troviamo alcuni ucraini a mercanteggiare e a trattare il loro ingresso nel dorato Occidente. È lì che un uomo d'affari perde tutto ciò che possiede ma trova qualcosa di più prezioso... e un giovane contrabbandiere di sigarette sfida il padre e il fratello per cercare di fare uscire la sua ragazza da un centro di detenzione... oppure Sonja, l'interprete tedesca, che rischia la sua carriera e la sua libertà per aiutare un clandestino... In questo incrocio fra due mondi dove l'unica legge è quella della sopravvivenza, uomini e donne lottano per conservare la loro dignità e i loro valori. Perciò in questo angolo abbandonato e ostile, talvolta nascono storie d'amore e di pietà in modo del tutto imprevisto. E se alcuni sogni svaniscono, altri si realizzano quasi miracolosamente...In concorso all'ultimo Festival di Berlino.
For some it’s the end of the world. For others it’s the start of a new life. The River Oder, which separates Frankfurt from Subice, Germany from Poland, is a magnet for thousands of people dreaming of a better life. This is where Ukrainians come to barter and try to arrange their entry into the gilded West. This is where a businessman loses all he has but finds something more precious still... and a young cigarette smuggler bullies his father and brother into helping him to get his girl out of a detention centre... and where Sonya, a German interpeter, puts her career and freedom on the line to help an illegal immigrant... At this crossroads between two worlds, where there is no law and only survival counts, men and women struggle to preserve their dignity and their values. So it can come to pass that love affairs sometimes blossom and acts of compassion are performed totally unexpectedly in this forlorn and hostile corner of the world. And although some dreams fade away, others are almost miraculously fulfilled...
