Kuno Nieff trova lavoro nel labirintico Museo di Storia Naturale di Berlino. Dovrà occuparsi di controllare che tutti i vasi contenenti resti di rettili e anfibi di ogni genere, conservati sotto alcol, siano ben chiusi in modo da evitare che il liquido evapori. La repulsione di Nieff verso questi animali scompare all'improvviso il giorno in cui, rovesciando uno dei recipienti, si accorge che il liquido ha un buon profumo e i rettili hanno un ottimo sapore. Inaspettatamente la collezione scientifica si trasforma in un paradiso gastronomico dei più raffinati. Ma gli animali prendono vita e gradualmente anche Nieff cadrà sotto il loro sortilegio.
Kuno Nieff finds work in the labyrinthine Natural History Museum of Berlin. His job is to check that all the jars containing the remains of all sorts of reptiles and amphibians preserved in alcohol are airtight, so that the liquid does not evaporate. The disgust Nieff feels for these animals disappears suddenly one day, when he knocks one of the jars over and the contents spill out. He discovers that the alcohol smells excellent and the reptiles don't taste at all bad. The vast array of jars changes from being a collection of scientific interest into a sophisticated gastronomic paradise. But the animals come to life and gradually even Nieff falls under their spell. |
