Nostalgico road-movie lungo le strade dell’Europa centrale, tra passato e presente, attraverso paesi e città di quello che per quasi quattrocento anni è stato l’Impero Austro-Ungarico: da Sarajevo a Vienna e alla Romania, da Trieste alle Bocche di Cattaro, dalla Puszta ungherese fino all’Ucraina. Utilizzando musiche, storie, aneddoti e leggende, guide turistiche e ritagli di giornale degli inizi del XX secolo, Rosdy ha dato vita a un viaggio affascinante nel tempo, che nasce dalla giustapposizione fra materiale visivo d’archivio, fotografie d’epoca e riprese moderne degli stessi luoghi, da cui emergono delle persone in carne e ossa, che lottano per sopravvivere e trascorrono le loro esistenze sospesi fra tradizione, cambiamenti e modernità. I grandi momenti storici rimangono sullo sfondo della vita di tutti i giorni, degli eventi quotidiani e dei piaceri semplici, come il canto dei gitani in Ungheria o il pranzo dei boscaioli romeni fra le montagne innevate dei Carpazi.
A nostalgic road movie that wanders from country to country, town to town, from old times to new, through the greater part of central Europe, territory that for nearly four hundred years boasted the name Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, from Sarajevo to Vienna to Romania, from Triest to the Bay of Kotor, from the Hungarian Puszta to the Ukraine. Using music, stories, anecdotes and legends, travel guides and newspaper clippings from the turn of the 20th century, Rosdy has created a fascinating journey through time built upon the juxtaposition of archive footage and photographs with contemporary shots of the same places. From them emerge the real people struggling, surviving, and living their lives between the worlds of tradition, change and modernity. Great historical moments are overshadowed by ordinary life, everyday events and simple pleasures, like the singing of Gipsy musicians in Hungary or forest workers taking their meals together in Romania’s snow covered Carpathian mountains. |
