"Nel 1960 la mia famiglia viveva in Brasile, quando mio padre scoprì che sua sorella e suo fratello, che vivevano a Mosca e che lui non vedeva da 40 anni, erano ancora vivi. Non potevano viaggiare fuori dalla Russia, così andammo noi a trovarli, ogni anno per circa 15 anni. A quel tempo io avevo una 8 mm e poi una Super 8, con la quale filmai la famiglia, le nostre uscite, i picnic, i mercati. Ho deciso di utilizzare questo materiale, che di per sè non era molto interessante montandolo con immagini dell’Unione Sovietica dello stesso periodo, dagli anni ‘60 agli anni ‘80. Ho utilizzato spezzoni di film, film di propaganda, e immagini di attualità. Il risultato è una sorta di cocktail dell’era Kruscev con un collage di musica sovietica e una voce fuori campo che racconta ciò che io ricordo del periodo della Guerra Fredda." (Vivian Ostrovsky)
"In 1960, my family lived in Brazil, when my father discovered that his brother and sister, who lived in Moscow and whom he had not seen for 40 years, were still alive. Since they could not travel outside Russia, we went ourselves to see them, every year for about 15 years. At the time, I had an 8mm film camera and then a Super 8, and I used them to film the family, our excursions, the picnics, the markets. I decided to use this material which was not very interesting in itself, by showing it alongside images of the Soviet Union of the same period, from the 1960s to the 1980s. I used bits of film, propaganda films and news reels. The result is a sort of cocktail of the Krushchev era with a collage of Soviet music and an off-stage voice recounting what I remembered of that period of the Cold War." (Vivian Ostrovsky) |
