Czernowitz è una cittadina sperduta nell’Europa centrale. Un tempo era la capitale della Bucovina e faceva parte dell’Impero Austro-ungarico. Ci vivevano Ucraini, Romeni, Tedeschi, Polacchi e Huzul. A quel tempo quasi la metà dei 150.000 abitanti di Czernowitz erano ebrei, che emigrarono poi nel corso dell’ultimo secolo in tutto il mondo. Il documentario riprende alcuni di loro, o i loro discendenti, che ritornano nella cittadina: il violoncellista Eduard Weissman che arriva da Berlino, le sorelle Evelyne Mayer e Katja Rainer da Vienna, l’attore Harvey Keitel e lo scrittore Norman Manea da New York.
Attualmente il sud della Bucovina appartiene alla Romania, mentre il nord con Czernowitz fa parte dell’Ucraina.
Czernowitz, a remote city in central Europe. Once it was the capital of the royal Bukovina province and part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Ukrainians, Romanians, Germans, Poles and Huzuls used to live there. At one time, nearly half of Czernowitz's 150,000 were Jewish. The Jew who fled Bukovina over the course of the last century have sought exile in many parts of the world. The film takes thes émigrés and their descendents back there. Cellist Eduard Weissmann sets off from Berlin, sisters Evelyne Mayer and Katja Rainer travel from Vienna, actor Harvey Keitel and writer Norman Manea from New York.
The southern part of Bukowina is now part of Romania, the north with Czernowitz belongs to the Ukraine. |
