Imre Nagy č stato il primo leader comunista a diventare, da Primo ministro, simbolo di una rivoluzione nazionale, il primo a sfidare il patto di Varsavia e a difendere la democrazia multipartitica. Il film cerca di raccontare la storia della sua vita da un’angolazione diversa, attraverso un punto di vista soggettivo, partendo dagli eventi del 1956 e continuando con la sua esecuzione per arrivare fino ai giorni nostri. Dopo l’assedio sovietico di Budapest, Nagy venne mandato in esilio in Romania per un anno e mezzo, poi riportato in Ungheria, arrestato e lasciato in prigione in condizioni inimmaginabili per quattordici mesi. Soggetto a continui interrogatori, tesi a estorcergli una confessione che giustificasse l’accusa di tradimento, Nagy rimase saldo nelle proprie convinzioni ideologiche e politiche, anche durante il processo che seguě. Non chiese mai clemenza, sicuro che le generazioni future avrebbero reso giustizia alla sua memoria. Condannato, giustiziato e sepolto senza alcuna cerimonia e in una tomba senza nome, non potč essere nominato ufficialmente per trent’anni nel suo stesso paese.
La sceneggiatura si basa sul diario scritto da Imre Nagy stesso, su ricordi della figlia Erzsébet e su documenti e materiali d’archivio.
Imre Nagy was the first communist leader to become the symbol of a national revolution, a prime minister, a denouncer of the Warsaw Pact, and an advocate of multiparty democracy. The film makes an attempt to throw light on the life of the prime minister from a different angle, and to present his story through a subjective point of view, starting from the events of 1956, going on to his execution and finally the events subsequent to his story until today. After the Soviet siege of Budapest on November 1956, Imre Nagy was first sent into exile to Romania, then taken back to Hungary where he spent fourteen months in prison, under inhumane conditions. He was subjected to interrogations that sought to wring evidence out of him in order to justify a charge of treason, he consistently stood by his ideological and political convictions throughout all the hearings and the trial. He did not plead for clemency, hoping that coming generations would do his memory justice. Buried without ceremony, for years his body laied in an unmarked grave, forgotten in his own country. For thirty years his name could not be uttered.
The script is based on the diary written by Imre Nagy, and the memories of his daughter, Erzsébet Nagy, as well as authentic documents and records.
