L’invasione sovietica di Praga nel 1968 vista attraverso gli occhi di tre personaggi: Tomas un chirurgo donnaiolo, la moglie Tereza ,sensibile e combattiva, fotografa dilettante ma di talento, l’amante Sabina fredda e distaccata. Esuli a Ginevra, i tre instaurano un triangolo quasi perfetto. Ma Tomas e Tereza decidono di tornare in patria, sperimentando la repressione: ‘retrocesso’ a lavorare come operaio Tomas deve alla fine abbandonare Praga per vivere in campagna e ritrovare un po’ di tranquillità assieme a Tereza e alla cagnetta Karenin. Sabina esule in California, riceverà qualche tempo dopo la notizia della morte dei due amici.
Jan Nemec ha collaborato al film in qualità di consulente storico su richiesta di Saul Zaentz, produttore del film e già produttore di Forman. Le sequenze d’epoca che documentano l’arrivo dei carri armati sovietici a Praga e che vediamo nel film, sono quelle girate dal regista ceco nel 1968, rischiosamente fatte uscire dal paese e poi confluite in Oratorium pro Prahu. Furono proprio quelle immagini a costringere Nemec, nel 1974, all’esilio.
The 1968 Soviet invasion of Prague seen through the eyes of three different people: Tomas, a surgeon and ladies’ man, his sensitive and pugnacious wife Tereza, who is an amateur photographer of considerable talent and his cold and detached mistress, Sabina. They all go to live in Geneva as exiles and establish an almost perfect triangular relationship. But one day Tomas and Tereza decide to return home and soon feel the full force of the regime’s repression. Tomas is demoted to the status of simple factory worker and in the end he decides to leave Prague with Tereza and their little dog Karenin and go to live in peace and quiet in the country. Meanwhile, Sabina is living as an exile in California and is given the news of her friends’ death soon after.
Jan Nemec assisted in the making of this film as historical consultant at the request of Saul Zaentz, the film’s producer and producer of Forman’s films. The original footage of Russian tanks rumbling into Prague were shot by the director himself and smuggled out of the country at great risk and included in Oratorium pro Prahu. These pictures were later decisive in forcing Nemec into exile in 1974. |
