Il signor A si sveglia una mattina e scopre che il mondo ha cambiato linguaggio. Il primo impatto con la nuova realtà è quello con la moglie. La donna sveglia il marito portandogli il caffè e pronuncia la frase "le formiche sono tristi". L'uomo esce di casa e incontra un vicino che lo saluta in maniera strana, poi compra un giornale di cui non capisce il senso. Arriva quindi al lavoro e cerca di sfogarsi con un collega ma questi parla una lingua a lui incomprensibile. Alla televisione vede un telegiornale in cui il giornalista farfuglia frasi a caso. Il signor A è ormai arreso all'evidenza: ha perso la capacità di comunicare. Ma gli rimane un dubbio: è impazzito lui o il mondo intero? È lui o è il mondo che non sa più parlare? La logica suggerisce la seconda ipotesi, il suo istinto no. Ma allora perchè lo spettatore comprende solo il linguaggio del signor A e avverte come inusuale quello dell'ambiente circostante?
"Il linguaggio è il vero centro attorno al quale gira tutta la storia... il mondo che gravita attorno al signor A diventa infatti ridicolo, informe, grottesco proprio perché quella logica che il linguaggio immobilizza in schemi semantici è scomparsa" (D. Cenetiempo, D. Trani)
Mr A wakes up one morning and discovers that the world has changed language. The first impact with this new situation occurs with his wife. She wakes her husband, bringing him a coffee in bed, and states: "The ants are sad". The man leaves the house and meets a neighbour who greets him strangely, and then buys a newspaper in which he can understand nothing. Eventually, he arrives at work and tries to unburden himself on a colleague, but here too, he is spoken to in an incomprehensible language. On the television he watches the news in which a journalist mutters random phrases. Mr A has to accept the evidence before him: he has lost the means to communicate. But a doubt remains: is it he who is mad or is the entire world off its head? Is it he or the world that is suddenly unable to speak? Logic suggests the second hypothesis, but not his instinct. But then how is it that the spectator is able to understand only the speech of Mr A, and sees all the surroundings as being odd?
