Un ragazzino di 10 anni, Esken che suona la fisarmonica, dalla faccia rotonda e dagli occhi vispi, molto curioso, , inizia a scoprire il mondo dal piccolo villaggio in cui vive, un paesetto sovietico nel sud del Kazakistan, all'indomani della Seconda guerra mondiale. Esken osserva gli adulti, gli abitanti del villaggio. Una puttana dal grande cuore, lo stupido del villaggio, la bibliotecaria gentile: Esken li fa ballare tutti il sabato sera, accompagnandoli con la fisarmonica. La vita scorre tranquilla anche se il Partito vigila e reprime gli oppositori, quelli veri e quelli presunti. Un giorno il padre di Esken viene arrestato e portato in un campo di prigionia, perché ha fatto sedere alla sua tavola dei soldati giapponesi, prigionieri, che vivevano nel paese…
Esken is a small, curious ten-year-old with a round face and lively eyes. He plays the accordion and begins to discover the world from the little village in which he lives, a Soviet hamlet in Southern Kazakhstan shortly after the end of the Second World War. Esken observes the adults who live in the village: a big-hearted prostitute, the village idiot, the kind librarian. Esken makes them all dance on Saturday nights, accompanying them with the accordion. Life passes by peacefully even though the Party watches over everything and represses any opponents, whether real or imagined. One day, Esken's father is arrested and sent to a prison camp because he has allowed some Japanese soldiers, now prisoners living in the village, to sit at his table… |
