L’azione inizia nel 1915, a Tashkent. Iskander è un commerciante di successo.. Pur avendo sempre pensato di sposarsi per amore, si sposa per pietà, comperando una ragazza orfana da una banda di malviventi, durante uno dei suoi viaggi. Tornato a casa con la giovane moglie, scopre che il fratello nel frattempo è morto e, secondo i precetti della legge musulmana, deve prendere sotto la sua tutela le due mogli del defunto. Così Iskander si ritrova con tre mogli. La Rivoluzione d’Ottobre porta nuovamente scompiglio nella vita di Iskander: le nuove leggi bolsceviche si scontrano con quelle musulmane e pertanto egli non può tenere tutte quelle mogli. Chiede aiuto a degli amici bolscevichi, e si lascia convincere da loro a entrare nel Partito e a lavorarvi come “oratore” cioè come “agitatore delle folle”, cosa che a Iskander riesce molto bene. Tuttavia Maryam Fazylovna, la segretaria della locale sede del Partito, non è soddisfatta: Iskander non può continuare ad avere tre mogli. I due hanno una serie di scontri/incontri dagli esiti inaspettati... finalmente Iskander ha trovato la donna della sua vita, quella di cui innamorarsi...
Presentato nel 2000 alla Berlinale, nella sezione “Panorama” e al festival di Karlovy Vary.
The action begins in 1915 at Tashkent. Iskander is a successful tradesman. Although he always thought he would marry for love, he eventually marries for pity, buying an orphan girl from a gang of criminals during one of his journeys. After returning home with his young wife, he discovers that in the meantime his brother has died and, in accordance with Moslem law, he must take the two wives into his care. So now Iskander finds himself with three wives. The October Revolution brings new confusion into Iskander’s life: the new Bolshevik laws clash with the Moslem ones, and he is unable to keep all three wives. He seeks help from some Bolshevik friends and is convinced by them to join the Party and work as an “orator”, that is, as a “crowd agitator”, something Iskander turns out to be good at. However, Maryam Fazylovna, the local Party secretary is not satisfied: Iskander cannot continue to have three wives. The two have a series of meetings/clashes with unexpected results… at last Iskander has found the woman in his life, the one to fall in love with…
