Un ragazzino di 12 anni, Jasulan, figlio di un pastore, soffre di una malattia al cuore: non potrà più correre nella steppa, se non verrà curato al più presto. La madre decide di portarlo ad Alma Ata, dove potrà essere visitato da medici specializzati. Arrivati nella grande città, capitale del Kazakistan, dove tutti parlano russo, Jasulan è l'unico ragazzino venuto dalla steppa e parla solo la sua lingua materna, il kazako. Se non fosse per un unico ragazzino, suo coetaneo, che parla anche lui questa lingua oltre al russo, sarebbe completamente isolato. Ma il sanatorio non è solo luogo di isolamento, non è solo il luogo dove per la prima volta non si dorme sotto un unico tetto con la madre. È un luogo di sofferenza ma anche di altre mille nuove scoperte: come un corpo femminile spiato attraverso una fessura che divide le docce degli uomini da quelle delle donne. Arriva l'adolescenza. Nuovi turbamenti e desideri e consapevolezze, nuove visioni, al di là della vita familiare nelle steppa.

A small boy of 12, Jasulan, a shepherd's son, has a heart disease; he will never be able to run across the steppe unless he is treated very soon. His mother decides to take him to Alma-Ata, where he can be seen by specialist doctors. Upon arriving in the great city, capital of Kazakhstan, where everyone speaks Russian, Jasulan is the only boy from the steppe, and he only speaks his mother tongue, Kazakh. Were it not for another boy, a contemporary, who also speaks his language other than Russian, he would be completely isolated. But the sanatorium is not just a place of isolation, not just the place where for the first time he is not sleeping under the same roof as his mother. It is a place of suffering but also of another thousand discoveries: such as that of a female body spied through a crack separating the men's showers from those of the women. Adolescence arrives. New disturbances, desires and awareness, new visions that go beyond family life in the steppe.
