A Nagyrev, un piccolo villaggio rurale della campagna ungherese, fra il 1900 e il 1929 almeno 140 uomini furono avvelenati dall’arsenico sciolto nel caffč dalle rispettive mogli. Gli avvelenamenti andarono avanti per alcuni anni finchč la polizia nel 1924 scoprě l’accaduto, ma le responsabili non vennero perseguite almeno fino al 1929, quando la notizia arrivň ai giornali. Vennero arrestate 51 donne, sei delle quali furono condannate a morte e tre si uccisero. Astrid Bussink č andata in Ungheria a intervistare gli abitanti di Nagyrev che ancora ricordavano quegli avvenimenti. Attraverso i ricordi dei protagonisti emerge una rete intrigante di vecchi, ma sempre attuali, racconti di vita, di morte e di lotta fra i due sessi. Oltre a ricostruire gli omicidi, il documentario č anche perň un ritratto di coloro che oggi vivono a Nagyrev, i quali si ricordano in modo diverso di quei fatti, ma allo stesso tempo riflettono sull’esodo dal paese e si lamentano del fatto che la vita in paese č noiosa: non c’č nemmeno un cinema o una palestra dove fare areobica.
In Nagyrev, a small village in the Hungarian countryside, between 1900 and 1929 at least 140 men died after their wives slipped arsenic into their coffees. The poisoning went on for years and the women were finally found out by the police in 1924, but were not prosecuted until the story hit the press in 1929. A total of 51 women were arrested, six were sentenced to death and three, including the midwife, committed suicide. Astrid Bussink travelled to Hungary and interviewed Nagyrev residents who remembered the murders. An intriguing web of stories unfolds through the characters'' memories which recapture old but everlasting tales of life, death and the struggle between the sexes. But besides a reconstruction of the killings, this film is a portrait of the present inhabitants of Nagyrev, who all remember something different about the murders an also muse about the current exodus from the village and complain about the fact that life in the village is boring: there is no cinema or aerobics club.
