Sükran è una quarantenne che lavora alla stazione centrale di Istanbul. Vuole molto bene al suo unico figlio Veysel ed è sempre in grande tensione per lui. Sükran ha sofferto molto in passato dei problemi politici di suo marito, ora morto, che aveva origini kurde. Perciò ha cresciuto Veysel cercando di tenerlo fuori da ogni influenza politica. Un giorno Veysel scompare. Lei lo cerca dappertutto e insiste a seguire la pista ufficiale per trovarlo. Non c'è registrazione del suo arresto alla polizia. I poliziotti le mostrano alcuni corpi senza vita per identificarlo. Tra questi c'è uno il cui volto è irriconoscibile. Sükran insiste nel sostenere che non è suo figlio, mentre Iule, la fidanzata di Veysel, è sicura che quello è il corpo di Veysel. Sükran è convinta che suo figlio è vivo e continua a cercarlo invano. Ahmet, un barbiere della stazione, uomo di cuore tenero e angosciato dai guai di Sükran va a casa di lei un giorno e le dice che un suo cliente, un poliziotto chiacchierone, gli ha raccontato di un giovane uomo, di nome Veysel che è stato arrestato ed è riuscito a scappare durante il trasporto. Sembra che Veysel sia stato visto nella piccola città di Mardin, nel sud-est della Turchia. Sükran decide di partire immediatamente per Mardin...
Sükran is forty and works in the central station of Istanbul. She is extremely fond of her only son, Veysel, and is always worried about him. Sükran has suffered much in the past as a result of the political problems of her now-dead husband, who had Kurdish origins. One day, Veysel disappears. She searches everywhere for him and insists on turning to officialdom to find him. There is no record of his arrest by the police, who show her some corpses awaiting identification. Amongst these is one with a completely unrecognisable face. Sükran insists it is not her son, whereas Iule, Veysel's girlfriend, is certain that it is indeed his body. Sükran is convinced her son is alive and continues searching for him in vain. Ahmet, a barber at the station and a man of tender heart who is distraught at seeing Sükran's worries, goes home with her one day and tells her that one of his customers, a talkative policeman, mentioned a case about a young man called Veysel who had been arrested and had managed to escape whilst on his way to the police station. It seems that Veysel had been seen in the little town of Mardin in south-east Turkey. Sükran decides to leave immediately for the town… |
