Hanns Elard Ludin, padre del regista, era un giovane ufficiale dell’esercito tedesco, che si mise in luce durante la Repubblica di Weimar sostenendo l’ascesa di Hitler. Quando Hitler salì al potere, Ludin fece carriera in fretta, diventando a soli ventotto anni “obergruppenführer”, a capo di un esercito composto da almeno 300.000 uomini. Nel 1941, Hitler lo inviò in Slovacchia come rappresentante del Reich, perché difendesse gli interessi di Berlino: egli doveva garantire lo sfruttamento economico del paese, l’appoggio militare della Slovacchia al Reich e anche la messa in atto della Soluzione Finale. A guerra finita, Hanns Ludin venne consegnato dagli Americani alle autorità cecoslovacche, che lo condannarono a morte per impiccagione. Fra le varie accuse, venne anche riconosciuto colpevole di aver ricoperto un ruolo centrale nello sterminio della popolazione ebraica slovacca. Il regista Malte Ludin, il più giovane dei figli di Hanns Ludin, parte da questi fatti per realizzare un documentario – dibattito con tre generazioni della sua famiglia.
Hanns Elard Ludin – the filmmaker’s father – found fame as a young officer during the Weimar Republic after having conspired on Hitler’s behalf in the German army. When Hitler came to power, Ludin quickly rose to become a Nazi stormtrooper Obergruppenführer and, by the time he was twenty-eight, he had an army of no less than 300,000 stormtroopers under his command. In 1941, Hitler sent him as emissary to Slovakia, to push Berlin’s interests. Alongside the economic exploitation of this country as well as military cooperation, these interests included the implementation of the Final Solution. After the war, Hanns Ludin was handed over to the Czechoslovakian authorities by the Americans; he was sentenced to death by hanging and executed. Among other things, he was charged with having played a central role in the extermination of Slovakia’s Jewish population. Hanns Ludin’s youngest son, filmmaker Malte Ludin, takes these facts as a starting point for a documentary debate with the three generations of his large family.
