Usando il punto di vista di un adolescente (Gyuri Köves), Sorstalanság racconta la storia degli Ebrei di Budapest durante la Seconda guerra mondiale: dall’obbligo di acquistare e cucirsi sugli abiti la stella di David, alla deportazione e alle atrocitŕ dei campi di sterminio di Auschwitz, Buchenwald e Zeitz. E poi la liberazione e il ritorno dei sopravvissuti nella Budapest del dopoguerra. E racconta anche gli sforzi di un quattordicenne che tenta di superare gli orrori inimmaginabili provati durante la deportazione. E al suo ritorno a Budapest viene trattato con indifferenza da tutti. Gli amici e i vicini di casa lo incoraggiano a non pensare piů al passato...
Basato sull’omonimo romanzo del Premio Nobel Imre Kertész, che ha accettato di collaborare alla sceneggiatura dopo che per molti anni aveva rifiutato di adattare il suo lavoro per lo schermo, il film segna anche il debutto alla regia di Lajos Koltai, uno dei piů importanti direttori della fotografia del cinema internazionale.

Told from the point of view of an adolescent boy (Gyuri Köves), Sorstalanság tells the story of the experiences of the Jewish population in Budapest during the Second World War: from the compulsory purchase and sewing of a yellow star of David onto their clothing, to deportation and their ordeal at Auschwitz, Buchenwald and Zeitz, as well as the liberation of the camps and the return of survivors to post-war Budapest. Sorstalanság chronicles the attempts of a 14-years-old to overcome the unimaginable horror of having been incarcerated in German concentration camps. On his return to Budapest Gyuri finds those around him treat him with indifference. His friends and neighbours encourage him to put the past behind him...
Based on the 2002 Nobel prize-winning novel by Imre Kertész, who for many years refused to adapt his work for the screen before agreeing to take on the task after all, Sorstalanság is also the directorial debut of the acclaimed cinematographer Lajos Koltai.
