1793. In seguito alla seconda spartizione della Polonia, l'esercito Prussiano invade il paese. Il giovane nobile Jakub, messo in prigione per cospirazione contro il re, è inaspettatamente liberato da uno Straniero vestito di nero. Jakub vuole andare a Varsavia per combattere per la libertà del suo paese, ma lo Straniero gli dice di tornare a casa. Sulla strada del ritorno, in una foresta, Jakub incontra un gruppo di attori girovaghi e il loro capo Herz lo invita a unirsi a loro. Jakub rifiuta dicendo che deve assolutamente tornare a casa: Herz allora gli dice che il ritorno a casa potrebbe essere tragico perché la fidanzata di Jakub sta per sposarsi con un altro uomo. Jakub non gli crede ma quando finalmente arriva a casa dell'amico guarda di nascosto il matrimonio dei due, vede la sua ex fidanzata incinta mentre fa l'amore con l'amico. Arrivato a casa sua apprende del suicidio del padre, dell'incesto di sua sorella e di sua madre che nel frattempo è diventata una prostituta. Profondamente colpito dal caos e dalla depravazione intorno a lui, Jakub in preda alla follia uccide chiunque si trovi intorno a lui con un rasoio che il misterioso Straniero gli aveva dato...

1793. In the wake of the second partition of Poland, the Prussian army invades the country. Young Polish nobleman Jakub, put in prison for a conspiracy against the king, is unexpectedly freed by a black-clad Stranger. The patriotic Jakub wants to go to Warsaw to fight for his country's freedom, but the Stranger tells him simply to go home. In the forest on the way home, Jakub meets a troupe of travelling players, and their leader Herz invites him to join them. Jakub refuses saying that he must get home as soon as possible but Herz tells Jakub that the homecoming can be heartbreaking because Jakub's fiancée is about to marry another man. Jakub doesn't believe the actor but when he gets to his friends' mansion he his sees his pregnant fiancée wedding and making love to his best friend. When he finally gets to his own house, he learns about his father's suicide, his sister's incest and his long estranged mother becoming a brothel madam. Deeply affected by the overall chaos and depravity, Jakub goes on a murderous spree using a razor, that the mysterious Stranger conveniently puts each time in his hand...
The film was banned by Polish authorities. It was screened for the first time in Poland in March 1988. |
