Partendo dai negativi di un film girato nei primi anni Venti, su un viaggio in India di un gruppo di turisti dell'alta borghesia, in un periodo di gravi tensioni anticolonialiste, Yervant Gianikian e Angela Ricci Lucchi decompongono le immagini andando alla ricerca dei gesti, dei comportamenti degli Occidentali in Oriente. Iconografia dell'orientalismo nel cinema documentario. Immagini del passato che preannunciano un futuro non molto diverso e che testimoniano la prima scoperta del fascino che l'esotico ha tuttora sull'Occidente. I primi turisti europei in Oriente fanno ancora parte di un turismo élitario, ma s'intravedono già alcune caratteristiche del futuro fenomeno del turismo di massa o, per citare il titolo, del "turismo vandalo". Il film alterna immagini fortemente contrastanti: da una parte le strade affollate di persone e di miseria, dall'altra i ricevimenti raffinati ed esclusivi in sontuose residenze coloniali ai quali partecipavano i viaggiatori europei. Erano e sono tuttora due mondi distinti e inconciliabili.
Starting from the negatives of a film produced in the early Twenties of the journey to India of a high-class group of tourists during a period of serious anti-colonial tension, Yervant Gianikian and Angela Ricci Lucchi decompose the images in a search for gestures, of the behaviour of Westerners in the East. Iconography of orientalism in documentary cinema. Images of the past that herald a future that is not very different and which bear witness to the initial discovery of the fascination that the exotic still evokes in the West. The first European tourists in the East were still part of an élitist tourism, but it is already possible to discern some features of the future phenomenon of mass tourism or, to quote the title, of "vandalistic tourism". The film alternates strongly contrasting images: on the one hand, the streets full of people and poverty, and on the other, the refined, exclusive receptions in sumptuous colonial residences in which the European travellers participated. They were and are two distinct and irreconcilable worlds. |
