”Idealmente, la compilation Conscious Rap!, comprendente 18 video musicali europei, rappresenta una mappa audiovisiva dell’Europa, delle sue idiosincrasie culturali e delle comunitŕ che la compongono. In Conscious Rap! l’hip hop si dimostra mezzo popolare e di facile fruizione per veicolare forme di resistenza politica. Questo č abbastanza evidente nei clip degli austriaci Texta, o in quelli degli ucraini Gryndzholy, entrambi molto critici verso il governo. Gli omicidi politici in Serbia, l’arbitraria repressione da parte della polizia in Islanda, appelli divertenti sul tema dell’AIDS e del sesso libero dalla Spagna, parabole sul calcio e sul governo Berlusconi, la censura perpetrata dalla cultura maschilista nei confronti delle donne turche, la mobilitazione contro gli slogan razzisti in Francia, le strategie di sopravvivenza degli inglesi che vivono nei “ghetti” delle case popolari, la critica nei confronti dei nuovi ricchi slovacchi, che consumano capitalismo e pornografia infantile… L’hip hop europeo, con i suoi contenuti politici, si č sganciato dal ruolo di semplice imitatore di quello americano. Questo rap, che si occupa in modo critico di questioni socio-politiche mettendole in rima, come si esprime, sul piano visivo,? Č stato questo uno dei punti da cui partire per un’indagine europea sui video hip hop attualmente in circolazione nel vecchio mondo.” (P. Erdmann)
”Ideally the compilation Conscious Rap! consisting of 18 european music videos generates an audiovisual map of Europe and its cultural idiosyncrasies and commonalities. In Conscious Rap! European hip hop is manifested as a popular and catchy means of conveying real-political resistance. This is evident in the clips from the Linz formation Texta or the Ukrainian band Gryndzholy, among others, that are critical of the government. Political murders in Serbia, arbitrary police repression in Iceland, amusing wake-up calls about AIDS and safer sex from Spain, parables about soccer and the Berlusconi government, censure of cultural macho behavior toward Turkish women, mobilization against racist slogans in France, English survival strategies in social housing ghettos, criticism of newly rich Slovakians consuming capitalism and child pornography ...
With its own political statements European hip hop has emancipated itself from being a faded copy of an American success story. How does rap that deals critically with social political themes in artful rhymes present itself visually? That was one of the starting points for this European survey of current hip hop videos from Europe.” (P. Erdmann)
