"On the road" in Slesia - ieri territorio tedesco, oggi polacco - sulla grande strada Ostenda-Kiev, voluta da Hitler negli anni ‘30 per facilitare l’invasione a Est, oggi ponte vitale verso l’Occidente. Lech Kowalski la ripercorre, camera in spalla, fermandosi a intervistare e ad ascoltare le storie della gente che lì incontra, quasi anelli di congiunzione fra passato, presente e futuro della Polonia. Una giovane prostituta bulgara, preoccupata che il suo protettore possa arrivare e vedere che gli affari vanno male; un uomo con una gamba sola che vende funghi (e le ricette migliori per cuocerli) mentre i Tir gli sfrecciano accanto a tutta velocità; clandestini ucraini, nascosti in una base missilistica nucleare abbandonata, che offrono il thé a un poliziotto che sorveglia la zona; giovani che vivono in bunker sotterranei e si sparano musica tecno a tutto volume; un venditore di nani da giardino che si lamenta di come si sta male al giorno d’oggi. E la visita ad Auschwitz, mentre uno zingaro fra i visitatori continua a chiedere a voce alta "perché?" e una coppia si lamenta perché lì nel paese non si possa costruire una discoteca... Kowalski riprende tutto, inesorabilmente, anche il vento e l’arrivo della pioggia, nel rumore di fondo incessante di macchine e camion che passano senza sosta.
"On the road" in Silesia - formerly German and now Polish - along the long Ostend-Kiev road planned by Hitler in the 1930s to facilitate his invasion eastwards, and today a vital bridge towards the West. Lech Kowalski follows it, camera on his shoulder, stopping to interview and listen to the stories of the people he meets on it, and who almost form a link between the past, present and future of Poland. A young Bulgarian prostitute, worried her pimp might arrive and see business is bad; a man with a single leg selling mushrooms (and the best recipes for cooking them), whilst the articulated lorries rush past at full speed; Ukrainian illegal immigrants, hiding in an abandoned missile base, offering a tea to a policeman checking out the area; youths who live in underground bunkers and play tecno music at full blast; a seller of garden gnomes complaining of how bad life is nowadays. And the visit to Auschwitz, whilst a gypsy wanders among the visitors loudly asking "why?" and a couple complaining that it is not possible to build a disco in the village.. Kowalski films it all inexorably, including the wind and the arrival of rain, with the incessant background noise of cars and lorries passing by unceasingly. |
