L’idea di questo film è nata nel maggio del 1995, durante un viaggio fatto da un gruppo di registi tedeschi in alcune repubbliche dell’Asia Centrale, in particolare il Kirghizistan e Kazakistan, per presentare alcuni film tedeschi. Dopo un viaggio aereo di 8 ore dalla Germania ai piedi dell’Himalaya, i registi scoprirono un villaggio chiamato Rotfront, lasciato così com’era durante il periodo stalinista. La pronuncia del nome della città è stata lasciata in tedesco, sia in kirghiso che in russo. Gli abitanti del villaggio parlano un tedesco arcaico e sembra un viaggio indietro nel tempo, all’inizio del XX secolo. Metà degli abitanti sono di origine tedesca: i loro antenati sono i Mennoniti, una minoranza religiosa tedesca. Il documentario descrive la vita di alcuni degli abitanti di Rotfront, i loro sogni e le loro speranze, le motivazioni che li hanno spinti a restare in Kirghizistan e a costruire lì la loro esistenza.

The idea of this film dates from May 1995, during a journey made by a group of German film directors to present some German films in some of the Central Asian republics, and in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan in particular,. After a voyage by air lasting 8 hours from Germany to the feet of the Himalaya, the directors discovered a village called Rotfront, left just as it was under Stalin. The pronunciation of the name had been left in German, both in Kyrgyz and in Russian. The inhabitants of the village speak an archaic German and the journey seems to be one in time not just space, to the beginning of the 20th century. Half of the inhabitants are of German origin: their ancestors were Mennonites, a German religious minority. The documentary describes the life of some of the inhabitants of Rotfront, their dreams and their hopes, the motivations that have driven them to remain in Kyrgyzstan and to build their existence there.
