Con il crollo dell’Unione Sovietica, nessuno sa più realmente chi siano i Russi: cosa sognino, in cosa credano e come vivano. Gli enormi grattacieli voluti da Stalin che circondano Mosca sono stati per oltre 50 anni un simbolo della Russia. Uno di questi, un condominio conosciuto come “La casa alta”, venne costruito da prigionieri di guerra e da carcerati dei Gulag e fu inaugurato nel 1953, pochi mesi prima della morte di Stalin. Vi andarono ad abitare moltissimi membri della Nomenklatura: dagli ufficiali del KGB a militari di alto rango, da rappresentanti prestigiosi del mondo scientifico a intellettuali, poeti, scrittori, attori, gente di teatro… Cinquant’anni dopo, qualcuno degli abitanti di un tempo vive ancora lì, accanto ai nuovi Russi che hanno costruito le proprie ricchezze nel giro di pochissimo tempo. Pavel Lounguine è andato a bussare alla loro porta per cercare di spiegare la Russia di oggi. Basato sul libro La casa alta della giornalista e scrittrice Anne Nivat, che vive nell’edificio dal 2001.
With the collapse of the Soviet Union, no one really knows who the Russians are anymore - what they dream about, what they believe in, how they live. The immense Stalinist skyscrapers that ring Moscow have been a Russian emblem for more than 50 years. One of them, an apartment building known as “The Tall House,” was built by prisoners of war and Gulag detainees and it was occupied by its first inhabitants a few months bifore Stalin died, in 1953. The inhabitants were all members of the Nomenklatura: not only KGB officers and high-ranking militare personnel but also prestigious representatives of the scientific and artistic intelligentsia, poets, writers, actors, theatre people… Fifty years later, some still live there, alongside with the new Russians, whose fortunes were made in a matter of months. Pavel Lounguine knocked at the doors of all these people to try to explain the present Russia.
