Dopo 10 anni a Mosca, Hamro torna al suo paese natio in Tagikistan per prendersi cura della madre che sta per morire. Hamro ha molti debiti ed è anche in ritardo sulle scadenze di pagamento. Per risolvere la situazione decide di vendere la casa e i mobili di sua madre il più velocemente possibile. Comincia a ristrutturare la casa, in parte perché pensa di poterla vendere a un prezzo migliore, ma anche perché vuole esaudire il desiderio di sua madre di un doppio cancello: il piccolo cancello che c’è ora non permetterebbe alla bara di passare e la madre teme un funerale umiliante. Hamro non ha fatto molte buone azioni nelle sua vita ma si rende conto che l’amore di una madre è forse la sola cosa su cui si può contare. Per lui è giunto il momento di iniziare ad ascoltare l’angelo che sta sulla spalla destra.
After ten years in Moscow, Hamro returns to his native town in Tajikistan to look after his mother, who is on the point of dying. Hamro is deeply in debt and is also late in paying back the instalments. To resolve the situation, he decides to sell his mother’s house and furniture as fast as possible. He begins to refurbish the house, partly as he thinks he can then sell it for a better price, but also because he wants to fulfil his mother’s wish for a double gate: the little gate that is there at the moment being too small to allow a coffin to pass, and his mother fears a humiliating funeral. Hamro has not done many good deeds in his time but he realises that the love of a mother is perhaps the only thing on which one can depend. The moment has come for him to start to listen to the angel by his right shoulder. |
