Un detective privato, accanito fumatore e amante del gioco, viene ammazzato nel suo ufficio. In flashback ripercorriamo gli ultimi momenti della sua vita, nel tentativo di scoprire l’identità dell’assassino. I personaggi che ruotano attorno alla misteriosa uccisione vengono associati dal detective alle figure delle carte da poker. L’inesorabile susseguirsi degli avvenimenti viene invece scandito dal numero delle sigarette fumate dal protagonista.
"The Last Cigarette è un breve film noir che gioca con alcune convenzioni del genere come la figura del detective privato senza morale, le sigarette e la femme fatale... Questo film è stato girato a Lampeter in Galles, a maggio (2004), in 4 giorni di riprese con un girato su cassetta effettivo di circa un’ora e un quarto... Io stesso sono rimasto particolarmente stupefatto dal risultato finale, ma mi ha aiutato a capire che si può raccontare una storia anche in poco tempo, con pochi mezzi e pochi soldi (le mie spese per il film ammontano a circa 15 euro) e ottenere comunque un buon risultato. Se dovessi definire la storia con una frase direi che: è una storia un po’ ovattata, che può sembrare reale ma si perde nel fumo delle sue stesse sigarette." (M. Devetak)
A private detective, a hard-bitten smoker and gambler, is killed in his office. We see the last moments of his life in a series of flashbacks in an attempt to discover the identity of his killer. The characters revolving around the mysterious murder are linked by the detective to cards in a game of poker. The inexorable succession of events is itself marked by the number of cigarettes he smokes.
"The Last Cigarette is a brief film noir that plays with some conventions of the genre, such as the amoral private detective, the cigarettes and the femme fatale. This film was made at Lampeter in Wales in May (2004), in four days of filming to make a work of an hour and a quarter I was myself amazed by the final result, which helped me understand that a story can be told even in just a short period, with few means and little money (my expenses for the film amount to about euro 15) and anyway achieve a good result. If I were to define the film in one phrase, I would say that: ‘it is a slightly muffled story that might seem real but loses itself in the smoke of its own cigarettes’." (M. Devetak) |
