Ethel, vent’anni, scappa dalla famiglia e va ad abitare a Parigi. Vuole diventare attrice. Viene notata da Lucas Kesling, nuova gloria del cinema tedesco ed europeo che, dopo averla sedotta, le offre la parte di Lise in un libero adattamento de I demoni, parte per la quale Ethel si rivela inadeguata. Ethel però scopre la doppia vita di Lucas: regista dal talento diabolico ma anche plagiatore di un giovane emigrato ceco, Milan Mliska. Così Ethel, rifiutata da Kesling che le rimprovera di essere una cattiva attrice, si avvicina al giovane Milan del quale viene a sapere che è stato l’amante di Elena, amica anche di Lucas, con cui aveva recitato in Germania e che ora è sparita nel nulla. Per stare vicino a Milan, Ethel accetta di interpretare il ruolo che fu di Elena. Ma, sottoposto a un odioso ricatto ordito da Lucas Kesling, Milan è costretto ad assassinare un alto prelato, in cambio del ritrovamento di Elena. La polizia lo insegue e lo uccide; Kesling si suicida, spaventato dall’idea che Ethel possa conoscere le vere motivazioni della morte di Milan...
Una piccola parte anche per Andrzej Jaroszewicz, l’operatore di quasi tutti i film di °u?awski, che qui interpreta l’operatore del film I demoni.
Ethel, 20 years old, flees her family and goes to live in Paris. She wants to become an actress. She sells is noted by Lucas Kesling, the latest darling of German and European cinema. After seducing her, he offers her the part of Lise in a free adaptation of The Demons, a part Ethel is not up to. However, Ethel discovers the double life of Lucas: a director of diabolical talent but also the plagiarist of a young emigrate Czech, Milan Mliska. Thus Ethel, rejected by Kesling who condemns as a rotten actress, she draws nearer to the young Milan from whom she learns that he was the lover of Elena, a friend of Lucas, with whom she had acted in Germany and who had now vanished. In order to stay close to Milan, Ethel accepts the part that was Elena’s. But, the victim of a fateful blackmail cooked up by Lucas Kesling, Milan is forced to kill a leading cleric in exchange for finding Ethel. The police pursue and kill him; Kesling commits suicide, scared by the idea that Ethel might know the real reasons for the death of Milan...
A cameo for Andrzej Jaroszewicz, the cinematographer of nearly all °u?awski’s films: he plays the role of the cameraman in The Demons. |
