Domenica 7 ottobre 2001. Alle 18.27 i primi missili Cruise colpiscono i loro obiettivi a Kabul, Kandahar e Jalalabad: ‘L’America risponde all’attacco’. In quella domenica fatale, un pittore di manifesti in Pakistan è preoccupato per il giorno del suo matrimonio, due uomini in Amazzonia sono felici per l’aumento del prezzo dell’oro, un musicista disoccupato suona in una stazione del metrò di Parigi, un minatore sudafricano lavora un turno extra, un americano in Cina scrive una lettera a sua moglie che sta in Ohio, una pop star egiziana deve cantare a Washington... È come la storia della farfalla in Cina, che con lo sbattere delle sue ali scatena una tempesta dall’altra parte del mondo. Solo che la storia si può leggere anche da un’altra prospettiva: le bombe che cadono in Afghanistan possono portare a guastare la gioia domestica a Parigi, a chiudere le porte di chi va al concerto di Washington, una donna pakistana non vuole mai più rivedere la faccia del suo fidanzato, o una donna in Ohio non si fida di suo marito per nessuna ragione.
Sunday 7 October 2001. At 6.27 p.m., the first Cruise missiles hit their targets in Kabul, Kandahar and Jalalabad: ‘America responds to the attack’. On that fateful Sunday, a billboard painter in Pakistan is worried for his wedding day, two men in Amazonia are happy because of the rise in the price of gold, an unemployed musician plays in a Prague metro station, a South African miner works an extra shift, an American in China writes to his wife in Ohio, an Egyptian pop star must sing in Washington… It is like the story of the butterfly in China, whose flapping wings unleash a storm on the other side of the world. Except that history can be seen from a different perspective: the bombs falling on Afghanistan can lead to ruining domestic happiness in Paris, to closing the doors of those leaving for the Washington concert, to a Pakistani woman never wanting to see the face of her fiancé again, or to a woman in Ohio no longer trusting her husband about anything. |
