Il film racconta la storia di Barbu, un ragazzino ucraino di dieci anni, che vive in un povero villaggio ai confini del mondo. Suo padre lo vende a Caruso, un artista di circo, assieme a Mimma la sorella più grande. Caruso promette che i due bambini lavoreranno nel Berlin Circus, di sua proprietà. Invece, dopo aver attraversato il confine con entrambi, vende Mimma in un bordello e tiene con sé il ragazzino, che inizia invece il suo apprendistato nel mondo del crimine. Nonostante tutto, fra il bambino e l’uomo si viene a creare uno strano rapporto. All’inizio, infatti, Barbu nutre ammirazione per Caruso e si fida ciecamente di lui. Da parte sua, l’uomo vede nel ragazzino dagli occhi scuri il figlio che non ha mai avuto. Ma quando Barbu scopre che Caruso ha venduto Mimma a un bordello, egli decide di scappare e di riprendere in mano il suo destino e quello della sorella. Ai due fratelli, però, servirà molto più del solo coraggio per poter fare ritorno a casa...
"Puoi incontrare questi bambini in ogni grande città, Praga, Parigi, Berlino, Milano. Quando parli con loro e ascolti le loro storie, la sceneggiatura viene fuori da sola... Vogliamo che le persone, alla fine del film, ridano e piangano allo stesso tempo. Così, quando incontreranno uno di questi bambini potranno guardarli con un occhio diverso." (I. Fíla)
The film tells the story of Barbu, a ten-years-old Ukrainian boy, who lives in a poor village somewhere at the end of the world. His father sells Barbu and his older sister Mimma to Caruso, a circus performer, who promises, that both children will be featured in his Berlin Circus. He smuggles kids across the border and than he leaves the girl at the brothel, and initiates Barbu into a life of crime. Neverthless, a strange relationship arises between them. At first Barbu is admiring Caruso and trusts him blindly. On the other hand, the man sees in the dark-eyed boy the son he has never had. But when Barbu discovers that Caruso has sold Mimma to a brothel, he decides to take his fate and that of his sister into his own hands. But they need more than courage to get back home...
“You can find this kind of kids in every big city – Prague, Paris, Berlin, Milano. When you meet them and listen to their stories, the script is almost done... We want people to laugh and weep at the end of film so then, when they meet one of these kids they can look at them in different perspective.” (I. Fíla) |
