Léon, un ungherese senza soldi, uscito da una clinica psichiatrica, s’imbatte sul treno che va a Parigi con Mickey, che ha appena rapinato una banca. Mickey vuole che Léon incontri Marie, la sua donna, una giovane prostituta al servizio della gang dei quattro malvagi fratelli Venin. Léon s’innamora di Marie, che sta al gioco pur senza abbandonare Mickey. Costui uccide uno a uno i quattro fratelli Venin (responsabili della morte della madre di Marie). Ma la spirale di violenza innescata sarà tragica per Mickey. Verrà ucciso durante una sparatoria, dopo che lui stesso ha pugnalato a morte Marie, mentre Léon scomparirà nel nulla.
È il film che segna l’inizio del sodalizio artistico fra Zulawski e Sophie Marceau.
Léon, a penniless Hungarian, just out of a psychiatric clinic, climbs aboard a train for Paris with Mickey, who has just robbed a bank. Mickey wants Léon to meet Marie, his woman, a young prostitute working for the gang belonging to the four wicked Venin brothers. Léon falls in love with Marie, who is happy to oblige although she does not abandon Mickey. The latter kills the four Venin brothers one by one (they were responsible for the death of Marie’s mother). But the spiral of violence that has been sparked off will lead to tragedy for Mickey. He will be killed during a shoot-out, after he has himself stabbed Marie to death, whilst Léon disappears.
