ITALIAN PREMIERE

Romania, 1981. Ceaușescu is in office, leading a communist Romania. He writes the official story with the help of the National Television. Mugur Călinescu, a 16-year-old teenager, writes another story on walls with chalked uppercase protest messages against the regime. His actions are compiled in a voluminous file kept by the Secret Police (Securitate), which observed, apprehended, interrogated and destroyed him. Linking both stories – secret and public, personal and collective – brings to light an unknown hero 30 years after the fall of communism.
Uppercase Print premiered at the latest Berlinale, in the “Forum” section.

“I saw the play sometime in 2012 and I remember talking to Șerban Pavlu about how a film inspired by the same case would never work – the only reason it worked on stage, claimed Pavlu, was that this kind of playwriting is unusual and … At any rate, I kept thinking of the play and I suppose the decision to turn it into a film ties in with my increased interest for archives, developed after seeing the play. In retrospect, I find that what Gianina managed to do isn’t just a theatrical success, but also very close to how I myself am interested in using archive materials to build up some of my films … There is more. I’ve just about had enough of my own ideas and wanted to make a film that would be a genuine collaboration, to make a different start. If the film looks quite a bit different from what I’ve done so far, it is also due to this collaboration, this different starting point.” (R. Jude)

Radu Jude
Among the most important and award-winning Romanian and European film directors, Radu Jude was born in 1977 in Bucharest. He graduated with a degree in Film from Bucharest’s Media University in 2003. The Trieste FF has presented a number of his previous films.
